Favorite books from my urban beach baby to yours…
Visit coral reefs and underwater worlds with some of the best ocean books for children. Through reading you can transport your family into an ocean adventure.
It’s a rainy weekend here in Southern California which means no sea breeze for my family and sand making it’s way from the car throughout the house. The rain isn’t stopping our beach adventures, say what? Our journey to the ocean begins with just a few of our favorite books. Join me on a mini tour of some of the favorite ocean books for children (and adults alike)!
Ocean – open your eyes to a world of discovery by Samantha Gray. The book is a photo filled mini encyclopedia of ocean life, awareness, tides and everything so wonderful about our blue planet. This was the first book we bought for our little beach baby before she was even born. It was hidden in a pile of books at a small used book store that honestly I cannot remember the name or location. I guess you could say with this purchase we were gearing up to raise our urban beach baby with true appreciation for the ocean. Her dad would read this book while cradling our newborn and no joke, she would stop crying almost instantly and stayed awake and alert for each page. The book was magic for us then and now is my daughter’s favorite. As you can see, it’s a very special item in our library.
My Little Book of Ocean Life by Camila de la Bedoyere uses breathtaking photographs to take us across the ocean floor and into the deep coral reefs. This book has taught my daughter about everything from starfish, dolphins, jellyfish to sea urchins.
Hawaiian Ocean Lullaby by Beth Greenway is a beautifully illustrated adventure of turtles and sea life through moonlit waters that will surely help your little ones drift off to dreamland. I credit this book with helping me bring the aloha life into our city home.
Surf’s Up by Kwame Alexander is packed with a message that jumps off each page by the surfing frogs – reading is fun! It may not be specifically about the ocean life but we love it!
Ten Splishy, Splashy Fish is a great counting book that takes you on an underwater adventure. This book has become a must have item in our suitcases, there’s something very comforting about it as my daughter counts the fish as they meet new friends and see new places in the ocean.
After a day of reading our favorites, I wish it would rain again tomorrow. Well almost…the sand is just really calling our names.
What are your book recommendations for children? Do they include visits to the coral reefs and ocean floors?
