Reducing Toxins in Your Home
I am fascinated with stories of people going organic, clean and chemical free from their food to the home products. For months, I have been drawn to researching how to do this, where to start and bottom line, is this a practical lifestyle for me and my family. Well I’m here to say it is possible! You just have to start! Together we can create a chemical free home.
When my inner passion is sparked, I tend to go all in way too fast and quickly become overwhelmed. I promised myself to start small and to create a lifestyle and not a fast fix for a chemical free home. I’ll be totally real with you, my home may never be 100% chemical free but I am reducing toxins. One by one I am getting those suckers out and making it a realistic and practical process. See, I said process not overnight fix and not an all-in or all out scenario. Think baby steps here and soon it will be a natural fit for you to choose healthier alternatives.
Chemical free home…starting with dryer sheets
You know that box of magic sheets that promises to reduce wrinkles, fight static, quicken drying time, and scent your clothes. Did you know that each dryer sheet is filled with toxins? The chemicals, I mean dryer sheets, also cost a pretty penny depending on the brand and store.
Just a few of the common things found in standard dryer sheets: benzyl acetate, camphor, linalool…say what? Is this English? If I can’t read it, why is it touching my child’s clothes, touching her skin and ultimately “caring” for her. No thank you. Goodbye dryer sheets!
For me it was a no brainer to start here on my chemical free home and lifestyle. My research led me to wool dryer balls as an alternative to traditional dryer sheets. Saving money on dryer sheets was a huge incentive but I was skeptical on the effectiveness of reusable dryer balls. So, I just kept this as an idea and didn’t make it a reality until a deal came across my email. Young Living, my oil essential brand of choice, was offering a limited special on a set of four wool dryer balls plus lavender oil for a fantastic price I couldn’t resist.
Two of my biggest concerns with creating a chemical free life are cost and satisfaction with the product. After my first laundry cycle, I was certain I’d be disappointed with the dryer balls. Quite the opposite! I have been using the combination of dryer balls and lavender oil for a month now and cannot believe I waited so long. I am completely satisfied and do not feel I’ve had to sacrifice for this toxin removal from our home.
I wish Young Living still had the dryer ball and oil deal but until it returns, I recommend picking your favorite essential oil (lavender, purification and so many more) and trying just a few drops on a dryer ball. I use 3 dryer balls but only add 2-3 drops of essential oil on one dryer ball per laundry load.
If you have the time and are a DIY person, you can make dryer sheets or dryer balls with help from Wellness Mama or you can purchase wool dryer balls through Amazon or other retailers.

I’m obsessed with my dryer balls and lavender. Leah loves to help with laundry (score!) and she’s the oil dropper in the family for laundry – don’t even try to do it 😉
Another awesome thing about the dryer balls and oils…get the kids involved. It becomes “their thing”, creating little helpers. I’m going to try lemon oil next 🙂
I love dryer balls. I make my own out of winding wool yarn into a ball. I never buy dryer sheets now.
I agree! Making the dryer balls is my next thing. I also feel like my stuff gets dryer much faster now with the balls.
