What is it about water that just draws us in? I can sit next to it or dive right in and be totally content for hours, no additional entertainment needed. After several hours poolside last weekend, I realized I neglected to reapply my favorite mineral sunscreen and this water baby got burned. Ouch! If you find yourself in a red-hot mess this summer, here are a few after sun care tips for you and your beach babies.
Tip 1 – Avoid getting sunburned
Slather mineral sunscreen on before you hit the pool, sand or even the backyard. The real key is to reapply the sunscreen often especially if you’re taking a dip into the water. That’s where I usually miss the mark. Seems simple right, but if you’re like me, you lose track of time by the water and forget to reapply. It’s always after that swim or beach day shower rinse that I find myself with new tan lines and sunburn spots. Lesson learned last weekend!
Tip 2 – Aloe + Lavender
Did you know you can buy an aloe plant, break off a steam and apply that directly to sunburn, skin rashes and more? If you don’t have an aloe plant, make sure to read the ingredients on the aloe vera bottle. I’ve seen too many brands with added ingredients and the real aloe is buried deep in the list of chemicals.
I like to put 1-2 drops of lavender in my hand with aloe and apply it directly to my sunburn. The cooling and soothing effect is immediate but the combination of the two items really helps calm the skin.
Tip 3 – Cool Down
Take a cool bath. Think of it as a spa day and you’re hitting the cold plunge pool. Just a few minutes in a luke warm bath helps soothe my skin.
Tip 4 – Hydrate
Keep hydrated from morning to night by drinking water. Your body will thank you especially after a sunburn. Plain old water is the best form of nourishment for your skin, body and mind. I’ve shared this before, I’m a huge fan of adding a drop of essential oils to my water. Peppermint and lemon are my daily favorites, but the options are limitless. Just make sure you are choosing Young Living as your oil to ingest. No two essential oil companies are the same.
